Thanks to the efforts of Mayor Velasco and Gilroy City Council, Senator Bill Monning and Assemblymember Anna Caballero, the City is making strides to address the repaving of State Highway 152 (First Street). As a result of these efforts, Caltrans has appropriated $1 million dollars towards emergency street repairs on Hwy 152. In partnership with Caltrans, City Public Works staff has surveyed the road and identified a comprehensive list of those areas most in need of repair for this emergency work. While $1 million dollars may seem like a lot of money, considering the current condition of Hwy 152, $1 million dollars is not a sufficient amount to do major repairs. We anticipate that this work will be completed this summer, although a firm timeline has not yet been set.
While this emergency repair work is greatly appreciated and greatly needed, it is not the full repaving work that is warranted by the disrepair of the street. Gilroy City Council will continue to work with State Legislators and Caltrans in efforts to move up the timeline for the full repaving of California State Highway 152.
