Encroachment and Transportation Permits

Encroachment Permit
An encroachment permit is required at least 5 days before beginning any activity within the public right-of-way. With each application a “Conditions of Approval” must be signed and submitted along with any plans, if applicable. An application fee may apply, as well as possible bonding and insurance requirements.

Street Closure
A Traffic Control Plan is required for all street closures and needs to be submitted with the permit application.  Please allow a minimum of 5 working days to process a completed permit application. Street closures are at the discretion of the department.

Transportation Permit
A Transportation Permit issued by the City of Gilroy is required for any vehicle traveling along city streets that exceeds state height, weight, and/or length standard limits. Single trip permits cost $16, an annual permit charge is $90, and a repetitive permit (six-month duration) is $90.

Completed Transportation Permits may be faxed to the attention of the Engineering Division at 408-846-0429 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday (except holidays). Applications can also be mailed or processed at the Engineering Division counter at:

Applications received after 4 p.m. will be processed the next business day.
